An interesting quick overview of public education in the U.S. There is one sentence about the Soviet Union and the Cold War that was bizarre, but otherwise this is a great snapshot.

I have read the Ruth’s Blue Thread saga and love Seven Stitches the most. The Blue Thread saga has a template: there is a girl who is not so perfect but has a strong sense of justice. Then, a mysterious girl, Serakh visits her and takes the protagonist to a different time to save someone. It links to the protagonist’s time, and she challenges problems that she is facing. The conclusion is not the best or ideal, but the protagonist becomes mature a lot. Although this saga repeats this pattern, it does not bore readers because the author skillfully elaborate a story line by adding charming characters, different worlds, and serious social issues.

The theme is consistent: justice. Meryem, Seven Stitches’ protagonist, was an ordinary girl but realized justice through confronting various issues: a natural disaster, loss of beloved mother, homelessness, and human trafficking. I would like people who are interested in one of those problems to read this book and find how she managed them. The author always does good jobs to interweave a story with social issues. Even though there are some sophisticate technology, such as microchips that inform location and health of the owner, or MyCom, a self-study device; the nature of human is consistent in any places and times.

I am personally interested in homelessness: Bandon and Calantha Corps’ efforts. Although the setting is 2058, this problem does not seem to be improved. The author might warn us that the present measurements toward homelessness does not work. Indeed, in Portland, the government and homeless people seem to repeat a cat-and-mouse game; homeless people make a camp and the government orders them to leave, then homeless people move their camp to another place, and the government orders…..without effective measurements. Homeless people survive relying on charity organizations like Calantha Corp. Seven Stitches may include a criticism of the government.

I would recommend all young adults to read Seven Stitches, think about the theme and issues, and discuss them with adults such as teaches or parents. It is written in easy English and divided into small chunks. Not only it includes strong messages that appeal to a society, but also includes beautiful exotic scene and tasty foods. I would like readers to simply enjoy it as an entertainment, and then, think about the issues, theme, and Meryem’s growth.
