Not any more or less stupid than any of its Regency/Regency-adjacent counterparts. The draw (if you will) to me was the fact that the lead spent about 90% of the book smoking opium with varying degrees of addiction. The obstacles between the leads are expectedly contrived, but taken to such a degree that no revelation could be satisfying. Points for shameless romanticizing Orientalism of the main characters, which is reasonably historically accurate.

This was excellent. SO good I was able to overcome one of my most hated storylines (hero having sex with someone not the heroine usually sinks the story for me). Some great angst, to be sure. Once it was HEA-bound, I felt like it dragged a bit, but the development of the relationship between Matthew and Jane was a great read. I'll definitely read more by this author.

The ONLY reason I am rating this so low is because it’s not just short, it’s unfinished. A steamy read for sure, but there is actual plot there, and it just leaves you hanging. There is even a scene where the H’s sister takes him to task for pursuing a maid, because it can only end badly for the maid. It’s made clear that he can’t marry her, and that taking her as a lover will ultimately ruin her life - she’ll certainly have a hard time finding work, and she will be an outcast. I could have forgiven the book being ridiculously short if there had been any indication of a HEA, but they just bone and then the story ends. SO disappointing!… (plus d'informations)
