After having read the synopsis for this particular novel, you may be forgiven in thinking that I may have had too much sun this summer, as this book appears to be one of those dreaded romance novels that I avoid as if I may catch something nasty from them; and you would be right, not about the sun thing but about this being a romance novel... except it isn’t one in the true sense of the word. From the very first page this book had me pulled in hook, line and sinker and, because I was expecting one of ‘those’ novels took me totally by surprise.

The male protagonist is written wonderfully and in such a manner that both male and female readers will develop a close connection with him. He is vulnerable while at the same time having an inner strength that the reader can only wonder at, is devoted to his family but also feels that fate is not on his side as life continues to throw one, almost unbearable curve ball after another at him. The female counterpart to his lead is a perfect foil for him, she is strong and capable in all the traits that he lacks, and is also able to retain her own individuality during the most trying of times and circumstances. The Author wrote these, and all her characters in such a way that they came alive within the novels pages, and make the reader feel as if there might be a possibility they would run into them as they go about their daily lives. These are three-dimensional, well fleshed out participants in a definitely not your run of the mill romance.

Now we move onto why this is not a romance book, it is primarily a science fiction novel which deals with time travel and just happens to include the story of a developing relationship between two of its characters. The fact that the romance wasn’t overwhelming made this book even more enjoyable for me. The plot line is excellent and contains plenty of fast paced action for those readers who like this kind of thing in their sci-fi/time travel reads and, although some of the scenes could have been written with a bit more punch for my liking, I attributed this to being the Author’s writing style more than anything wrong with the novel. My one complaint and the reason for the four thumbs rating was I would have liked to have read more about the world in which our male lead finds himself in even though it was not necessary to the flow of the story, it would have added a little more depth.

I would highly recommend this to all readers of time travel and science fiction novels and to anyone who want an enjoyable read with a twist.

I felt like I was reading 2 books - one was a pretty standard time travel story, and the other was a totally unbelievable romance novel written by a High School freshman. The romance story was ridiculous, nothing credible about it at all.
On top of that, the audiobook narrator was possibly the flattest, most dull sounding professional that I've ever heard. I refer to him as a professional because I've listened to many Librivox stories that were narrated by "regular Joes", and there is a marked difference in how well a professional reads. The handling of tone and inflection alone is enough to tell the pros from the amateurs. However, the narrator simply was incapable of handling any voices. All of the non-dialogue parts were just fine. But the characters were all over the place - most of the men's voices were cartoonish while all of the ladies' voices seemed like the same hoarse whisper.
Frankly, I'm a little surprised by the high review.

Though this is a short story, it covers a lot of ground. It starts off in Omaha, Ne, which I enjoyed as I’ve lived here most of my life. It was interesting to read some of Omaha’s history about the ‘orphan trains.’ I can’t imagine how terrifying and frightening it would’ve been for child to be basically given to anyone who wanted them. Most were probably taken as servants. Maddie was lucky in that Lilly wanted more that; she wanted a child to raise as her own.

Since this was a short story, it did have some holes in the story line. Like I really wanted to know what happened to Lilly’s husband Johah. How did he meet his death? And the relationship between Maddie’s father Luke and Lilly kinda of sprang up without much fanfare. But I do know relationships/marriages back then were forged fast. They had too, to survive the rigors of the Wild West. I have heard that Lorrie intends on rewriting this piece and extending it into a novel. I hope she does as I can’t wait to read it.

If you like westerns with a clean romance and intrigue, I recommend this well-written story. I give it 4 feathers.
