There's some cute things in here - and not so cute things. Some sewing aromatherapy pillows, easy candle decorations. The book is a bit plain, however. Nothing very detailed or unique. There are a lot of wreath crafts.

This book is THE craft book to have. It has beautiful crafts, anything from cute and country to sophisticated and unique - these crafts are to die for. Some aren't my style but for the most part .... My favorite crafts ( wish I could show a picture on the site of what these look like!! ) are the Herbal Ice Bowl, the Lavender Hearts, Homemade Herbal Soap Balls, Chamomile Fruit Bowl, and the Culinary Herb Hanging. The good things is no matter how simple or detailed these crafts, step by step instructions are given - with mini pictures for each of the steps, and a full paged picture showing the stunning result.

This book has a wonderful layout. Nice, smooth paper used, beautiful pictures, in depth directions with pictures for the steps - and of course the finished product.

It begins with the introduction -- a few paragraphs on natural crafting, then on to a few pages for herbal folklore, and then some instructions for some simple herbal methods for medicinal use - infusion, decoction, compress, poultice, steam inhalation. After that a brief section on Aromatherapy - in the bath, for massage, and as an inhalation ( paragraph a piece. ) Following this, and ending the introduction, are some beautiful pictures of herb gardens and a brief note on them.

We then go to the book's gardening section -- The first part is container planting, with pictures. The second few pages are growing from seeds, collection seeds, and cuttings.

There is some information following them on harvesting and drying your herbs for whatever reason you wish -- and then the gardening-like crafts begin!!! :)

1. Planting a Knot Garden - This is a unique garden with steps explained in detail.

2. Kitchen Sill Herb Garden & Standard Herbs - a picture or 2 of these, not really crafts, more of an explanation of options.

3. Herbal Hanging Basket - This is very nice. All the ingredients and herbs to be used are listed, along with picture directions, and a stunning result you would be more than happy to display.

4. Gift for Containers is a cute idea briefly discussed ( I liked the idea of the old oil can herb garden for the cooks in your life.

5. Herb Window Box - Stunning! Very nice window box, definitely need to find a unique crate before doing this one - this window box craft involves painting the box in a stain way following the patterns of the herbs used. Very nice.

6. Thyme Pot - This is a cross between an herb pot and thyme garden. Personally I don't like the pots that have some herb or plant growing out the side, but many do.

Section III - Decorative Herbs

1. Chamomile Fruit Bowl - This is a GORGEOUS display to make when you have company for a centerpiece in the table. Absolutely beautiful, easy, and inexpensive to create. A bowl is used the process of the making the craft, but the end result doesn't show the bowl for it is covered from a beautiful arrangement of rosemary, oregano and chamomile flowers - put the strawberries in the middle. Stunning :)

2. Fresh Rosemary Heart - Shows how to make a dried ( or fresh ) heart with Rosemary to hand on the wall or whatever you wish

3. Miniature Marjoram Urn - Cant say you see one of these everyday

4. Sage and Mini - Vegetable Wreath - All fresh ingredients are used. A very nice wreath for the kitchen.

5. Trapped Bay Leaf Embroidery - This ends up being framed in a picture frame - a nice craft but I am not really into using the bay leaves for it, preferring a different part of an herb. The embroidery idea ( putting the herb inside the fabric is easier than it looks! ) is excellent - and could be a great base idea for individualized crafts to come.

6. Simple Herb Garland - This one isn't for me. I just don't find it attractive. The picture shows the craft hanging over the fireplace.

7. Culinary Herb Hanging - Wooowww-eee! This is SO clever - to buy it in the store as a display, you are looking at some good spending ;) I haven't seen anything like this around though; not your average display BY FAR. Chicken wire is used to "build up" herbs in a beautiful shape as in a large bush - thyme, oregano, sage and chili peppers are used - the chilies provide a beautiful color for the green background. Multi layered craft that looks stunning - you could never tell this was made with chicken wire underneath ;_ 2 terra cotta pots finish it off by being hooked in the front sort of sideways - you would need to see a picture of it to understand - and these pots have herbs growing out as well. Very unique and gorgeous herb - would make a great gift for the plant enthusiast.

8. Sage Table Decoration - To me this craft is a little plain, but I didn't know you could make sage look so pretty by itself ;)

9. Herb Tussie Mussie - Nice name eh? A unique and colorful fresh floral arrangement is the result.

10. Lavender Obelisk - this is a very fancy and classy craft - something sophisticated and stylish. Would need a certain decor in the house to go along with it for sure.

11. Aromatic Picture Frame

12. Dried Aromatic Wreath

13. Dried Hop Candle Ring

Section IV - Aromatic Herbal Gifts

1. Herbal Bath Oils and Flower Waters
2. Herbal Potpourri
3. Homemade Herbal Soap Balls - VERY NEAT!!!!!!!!!
4. Lavender Moisturizer
5. Potpourri Pouch - Nice idea
6. Bay Leaf Candles - very easy craft with bay leaves around the candle
7. Rosebud Heart - you would need to be a true Victorian to like this one
8. Aromatic Hot Mat - Very nice idea using spicy herbs inside. Also very good for a display
9. Ribboned Lavender Hearts - these are gorgeous and she hooks hers on some chairs. A beautiful heart with a very nice ribbon display with hangers made by the same fabric ( and, of course, lavender inside )
10. Gauzy Sleep Cushion
11. Appliqued Satchets - These are adorable mini pillows, a country look craft

Section V - Delicious Herbs

1. Herbal Oils and Vinegars
2. Fragrant Herbal Drinks
3. Herbal Ice Bowl - ONE OF THE BEST CRAFTS IN THE BOOK - STUNNING!!!!!!!
4. Crystallized Flowers
5. Lavender Sugar
6. Garden Flower Pavlova - a gorgeous dessert that looks as good as it probably tastes - it seems as if only a trained chef could make it if you saw it from the picture alone without the instructions
7. Warm herb bread
8. Thyme and Mustard Crackers
9. A quartet of herbed cheeses
10. Herbal Preserves
11. Rosemary and Ratafia Cream
12. Herbal Teas for gifts

Section VI - Herb Directory

Some information on various herbs ( with a picture for each herb listed! This is a plus as most herbals I have don't have this many pictures ).

Whoever chose the fabrics for the designs in this book should be shot. The clothes are all just plain ugly. I don't think the patterns and directions themselves are that bad, but it's hard to be sure given the way they were made up.

The German edition seems to be quite different from what is described in the other review, although it claims to be a translation of that book.

On the back of the recent BBC series this book essentially covers the projects that the contestants were asked to make. What is also included in the book is some historical details on Sewing Bee's, including those hosted by the then Queen, and more commonly and affectionately known the Queen Mum.

From 1939 The Blue Room at Buckingham Palace was opened and all the female staff invited to attend the "Stitch to Victory" sewing bee that took place twice weekly. It was an attempt, and a successful one too, to get the women in the Country behind the War work and bring a sense of togetherness when the Country was at it's darkest days.

Also included is a rare known fact that the husband of Mrs Beeton included a traceable pattern in every printed edition of The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine. The magazine was published from around 1880 and the patterns started being issued from 1863.

The book also contains how you can create your basic sewing kit.

Once you have gone beyond basic sewing kit and the history elements of the book the projects begin. Each project is described in full, with handy tips and guidance all the way through. There is a real mix of projects; from an apron to patchwork throw, a bow tie to waist coat, laundry bag to curtain, cushions to dresses & skirts.

There is guidance on selecting material, tacking, sewing seams, patterns and much more.

I have to say, I was plunged back to my childhood as I read the book. To moments of having to stand still whilst my Mum hemmed up the latest dress she had sewn, to helping her look for lace for her latest creation or patchwork squares for a quilt. Looking back now recalling how I hated wearing handmade dresses, not understanding or appreciating the effort and skill it took to pull it all together into a fine piece of clothing; and whilst I hated wearing those handmade articles, I was never laughed at by the other kids, which means that it was a good job well done; as we all know kids can be brutal when it comes to perhaps being different.

I enjoyed the book. I enjoyed what it was trying to achieve, I enjoyed revisiting those memories, things I hadn't thought of in years and the things that I had forgotten about. The book is well laid out and presented. There is lots of guidance and ideas for sewing projects.

The final pages of the book are given to an index with the acknowledgements to the show and book production teams.
