Joclyn is a pretty normal teenage girl that goes to a pretty typical high school. She doesn't like attention, so she wears hoodies and baggy clothes in order to blend in the background. She is not popular or even kinda liked by most people at her high school. She is also the target of bullying. However, she does have a wonderful boy that's a friend that's more than a friend named Ryland, so that makes her life a little better. The only difference between Joclyn and your average bullied teenager is that she received a bite on her neck when she was five years old that seemed to ruin her life.

She learns about halfway through the book (after a lot of drama) that she is not exactly mortal. She has magic in her blood. This of course causes lots of problems with Ryland and her mother. I am going to stop with the brief overview because I don't want to give away the book.

I liked Joclyn for the most part. She seemed like a straight shooter who just wanted to keep things to herself. She didn't want to be noticed or people to make a big fuss over her. However, that dialogue started to get tiring after a while. I loved her relationship with Ryland (more on that later) and her loyalty to him. My favorite thing about her was her dedication to the cause. Once she learned who she was and what she would have to do to fight evil she was in 100%. She worked her butt off to be the best magician (?) that she could be to save Ryland and the world.

Ryland was precious in this book!! I loved his cockiness and his sexiness (even though he was only like sixteen or seventeen). He just seemed like the epitome of an awesome male character. His dedication to Joclyn was strong! He is willing to leave his family and everything that he is taught to just be with her. The only thing I didn't like was that I didn't get to know him as much as I would have liked. There was honestly just not enough Ryland in this book to satisfy me!!

Ryland and Joclyn have a really intense relationship. They have known each other since they were young, and as they aged their relationship grew. You could tell (at least on Ryland's end) from the get go that they were in love with each other. However, they both seemed to fight the relationship (more Joclyn than Ryland). I love books that have this type of romance angle; my favorite story line is watching best friends slowly fall in love. It makes for an intense read!! Make sure to pay attention to the connection that Joclyn and Ryland share, it is really important as the book and probably the series progresses.

I really wanted to like this book. I saw glimmers of good story-telling. In my opinion, character development was decent. The big-story picture showed promise. The story was in no way formulaic; a weakness often found in modern novel-writing. Narration, inner dialogue and plot balanced well along w/ reasonable pacing at times but then fell so far off the mark as to be annoying. I understand about character arcs, so I waited... and waited for Joclyn to show any sign of strength; but, alas, she did not. If I were only to compare this book to other self-published books I'd have given it a four, as the list of really bad indie books crowd the market. But I have to ask myself this: what does it mean when I, as the reader, wished for Jocylyn to die at the hands of Ryland? I had just gotten too tired of her whining, her complaining, her weaknesses, and failures, which seemed to grow by the page. I understand this is book 1 in a series, but it's as though 1/3 of the story screamed: finish me! Sadly, my hope for this series died with the first book. But kudos to the author for holding story elements together w/ decent editing, glimmers of finesse, and good overall story-telling.… (plus d'informations)

Okay start

This book was okay, a little angsty maybe? Which is common with ya. I love but also dislike the covers too. The Mc is supposed to have gold skin and tomato red (they describe it a lot) red hair, and the covers all have a pale freckly ginger, I know covers aren’t necessarily indicative of what is inside, it just made it difficult for my brain to picture anything else.

I’m definitely going to keep reading... buuuuuuut I’m also a little hesitant because there’s going to be 5 books (so far, not sure if that’s the end) and I’m just not sure if I can stay invested for that long. I love long series don’t get me wrong, I just don’t know if the story can support all that without it feeling like it’s being stretched. You know? We’ve all read those series that really could have and should have wrapped up in fewer books, instead of tacking on more ‘oh no now this happened’ moments.

So over all an okay read, a little angsty which the fmc is 17 so it fits (the males definitely don’t give off the ‘been around for hundreds of years’ vibe’ ), a few issues with wrong names, but definitely in for book 2 and as long as it doesn’t get drug out unnecessarily most probably finish the series.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book! Very good start to a nice, long series. If you have a lazy afternoon and need a escape book, look no further!
