- Paul Engelmann was born to Jewish family in Olmütz, in the Austro-Hungarian Empire (present-day Olomouc, Czech Republic). He studied with modernist architect Adolf Loos in Vienna, and became the private secretary to famed writer and journalist Karl Kraus. After the end of World War I, he worked as an architect in Europe and designed private houses in various cities. Engelmann is best known today for his friendship with Ludwig Wittgenstein between 1916 and 1928, and for being Wittgenstein's partner in the design and building of the Stonborough House in Vienna. In 1934, he emigrated to the British Mandate of Palestine and settled in Tel Aviv. His Letters from Ludwig Wittgenstein With a Memoir was published posthumously in 1967.
