I got this book as part of my exploration into vernacular architecture. Also, I happened to be looking for property at the time, and thought a barn might be in my future.

I wasn't very impressed with the book. Apparently the authors are based in New Jersey, so part of it might be my disappointment at the lack of inclusion of the classic New England barn. Compared with most architectural books, the photos are poorly laid out, and each barn is only given a few pages, if that. It feels more like a scrapbook than an actual book. Although the table of contents suggests a structuring of the book, the reading experience feels anything but structured—more like reading a series of Tumblr posts. I wish the book went more deeply (both with text and photos) on a handful of carefully chosen barns.

Also, although there is a nice glossary of terms in the back, the book does not make an effort at helping its readers actually understand barns (the history of architectural styles, their constructions, their uses, etc.). Hubka's "Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn," isn't even just about barns, but is a far more useful and interesting book if you'd like to actually learn something about barns and their history in the United States.

I think that most people don't generally read "coffee table" books. Unfortunately, it seems like the editors and publishers of this book went with that assumption. If you want something to page through for ten minutes, you'll find this book engaging. But if you're looking for a book worth more than ten minutes, look elsewhere.
