Very pleasant, low-key and quasi-autobiographical essays given by Lord Elton over the BBC in 1937-1938. They are, he readily admits, not quite accurate renderings of what he said during what appears to have been the brief talks, but for all that, they're liberal doses of quiet, sunny memories. Little wonder one of the three series came after the Munich Crisis. It was probably what was needed. I don't believe this was ever published in the US, though for some reason, a French edition came out in the 1950s. In any event, recommended as a palate-cleanser.… (plus d'informations)

In one way, a conventional history of the British Empire from 1600 to 1946. Interesting chiefly because it represents, on the whole, a self-satisfied British view at almost the last moment such a view was possible.
