A workman-like biography of a workman-like officer, Elliott has the problem of writing the life of a man who shunned notoriety and who mostly went about the business of fulfilling his duty to the best of his ability; it doesn't leave for many colorful stories. That Stewart emerged from the snake pit that was the Confederate Army of Tennessee respected by most everyone he encountered is probably the man's most salient military achievement.
