Heed the warning about politically incorrect! And I hope that you didn't mistakenly buy this thinking it was a reverent translation of Genesis. Bible believers will not be happy. Ebling works his way through the book of Genesis (first of a projected series) with complete irreverence, and an eagle eye for the redundant, the contradictory, the morally questionable, and the rather implausible. (He mostly skips over the genealogies.) And he has a lot of good points. He makes a convincing case for the idea that the book is composed of multiple versions of the same story, sometimes very clumsily stitched together. A delight to the irreverent. I read it while switching back and forth with a more traditional rendering of Genesis that I also have on my Kindle. I really recommend having a straight translation of the Bible on hand while reading this.

I found this very hard to rate, however. Not only politically incorrect, but a liberal use of profanity and obscenity. What bothered me the most of all is that women, to Ebling, are either a piece of ass (if they are attractive), or a pig (if they aren't attractive.) Thanks a lot! I found that rather off-putting, and I will hope not to see it, or at least less of it, in future pieces. He is also very fond of using variants of f*ck for sex. I was a teenager back in the era of the Sexual Revolution, and it struck me as rather odd, if not alarming, that it was a preferred term for an activity held to be necessary, uplifting, liberating, and beautiful, when I considered all of the definitions of the word.
