‘At the Football Match: Last Saturday’, Punch… par Billy T.
Also known by the alternative title, 'Rookie Nolan's Poem', this is a humorous tribute to the pugilistic skills of Melbourne player Bernard Nolan, who was a prominent participant in a brawl between Essendon and Melbourne players on the 17 August 1907. Also published in Garrie Hutchinson (ed.), The Great Australian Book of Football Stories, (1989), pp. 108-110.
Benno is a colourful barracker and this story is a full emersion into the larrikin vernacular of the football supporter of the early twentieth century. Also published in Garrie Hutchinson (ed.), The Great Australian Book of Football Stories, Viking O'Neil: Ringwood, Vic, 1989, pp. 101-107 and has the alternative title, 'Benno the Barracker'.
