An interesting book. Admittedly, I didn't know much about the subject when I first started reading this, but I found that the author's work is rather direct, speaking to you as the reader without a wall in between, and unique. It serves the purpose of the book well, and I liked that. At times it goes on a bit too much about one particular thing or another, but these moments are brief and the book as a whole is strong, with a unique voice.

lenny duncan writes about Black liberation through prose and poetry that reflects hip-hop music in "Psalms of my People." End notes helpfully provide context for readers unfamiliar with hip-hop or Black history. The format may be very accessible or a struggle, depending on the reader's understanding of these topics.

This book is some of everything in the best possible way. And, as advertised, prophetic.

(NB I was given a finished copy of this book by its publisher.)

lenny duncan's Psalms of My People is a creative, emphatic declaration that Black people need a new living scripture, that provided by hip-hop lyrics. They contend that hip-hop is the Holy Spirit at work, a message from the Creator. They do not"prove" this by logical argument; rather, they provide example after example of lyrics that describe and clarify the truth of the life that Black Americans face.
I have made a point of listening to a sampling of these songs, from Lauryn Hill to Kendrick Lamar to the Notorious B.I.G. I am not at all qualified by my life experience to understand very much of what duncan is saying, but his book has opened my eyes to things I had never seen, and helped me to find some hip-hop music a little less opaque.… (plus d'informations)
