Opal Lee is considered the grandmother of Juneteenth. She has fought for many years to make Juneteenth in official national holiday. She did finally succeed. The story looks at how Juneteenth came about, and why it should be celebrated. It also gives a brief look into Opal’s experiences, and what made her such a proponent for this national holiday. Lovely book with great illustrations that sure to be read for years to come.

This illustrated novel gives students and young readers a look into what fighting for civil rights was like during King's era in 1968.… (plus d'informations)

This moment spoke to me, as it will likely speak to students, about the internal struggle of expression. But the message of hard work paying off, when Gwendolyn is awarded a Pulitzer Prize, reigns supreme. The illustrations are highly geometric, making bold use of contrast and negative space. Recommended for upper elementary and middle school.… (plus d'informations)
