I have read quite a bit about Lean as I have embarked on educating myself about various Continuous Improvement approaches. I did not find this book particularly enlightening. There were some interesting ideas, certainly, but my first problem is that the author tries to represent Operational Excellence as something more and better than Lean, and if it is, I don’t see it yet. I also felt that some of the methods were not clearly explained and the connection between them was vague at best. The argument was made that the steps had to be taken in the order presented and that all of the steps needed to be followed, but no good argument was presented as to why. One of the hardest lessons I have had to learn is to always explain why; you can’t take the shortcut and expect others to just believe you. I didn’t feel that this was the approach here. The form of the book, a novel as used in The Goal by Eli Goldratt, was poorly executed as well. It just felt like not much effort was put into making the story interesting and engaging enough to carry the intended message.
