Bavarian Lager: Beerhall Helles History, Brewing… par Horst D. Dornbusch
Dornbusch is interesting. When he's writing about the history of beer and its role in society he comes across as the most crass shill in the history of marketing. He's like a used car salesman for German beer. Yet when he discusses the technical aspects of brewing, I'm all ears. Mind, I need to learn a LOT more about brewing to appreciate the finer points, but Dornbusch certainly sounds credible. I'll be tempted to read his treatises on alt and koelsch, two styles that I like loads more than helles.… (plus d'informations)
Fairly basic and jingoistic primer about the history of beer in Germany. Loads of information missing or suspect. There's very little discussion about brewing in other countries, nor the effect that unification had on brewing in the north. A missed opportunity.
A truly remarkable book! This book is full of recipes on how to make beer; many different types of beer, from different regions, different times and different cultures. I cannot say that I understood all of the information found in this book but I found the stories and history to be very interesting. If you are a brew master this book has to be on your shelf!
I found this book to be very fascinating. I am not a big beer drinker myself but I found the history and information in this book to be interesting. First I did not know that beer and European history were so intertwined. I also did not know much about the brewing of beer or what the difference was between ale and lager. Now that I have read this book I am more interested in trying to find the right beer for me. I look forward to reading more of Horst’s books.
