This is one of the best books about the archaeology of the book. It discusses the discovery of ancient Egyptian papyri, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Codex Sinaiticus and other related topics. This book brings together material from disperate sources and material mostly available only in academic/scholarly publications. Also, this book is just great reading.

Schliemann is famous as the man who discovered Troy, although in fact it was not Homer's Troy he discovered, but a later city on the same site. Unfortunately, the excavation techniques he used damaged the site and made it difficult for later archaeologists. Nevertheless, his contribution cannot be gainsaid.

This is a very scholarly and readable biography that places Schliemann squarely within the context of his times.
