En palabras de Sir Gavin de Beer, Rousseau se alza como uno de los más importantes precursores del romanticismo. Su poderosa influencia sobre escritores y pensadores posteriores con su teoría sobre la corrupción de la naturaleza humana por la sociedad.

Where did the army of Hannibal cross the alps? Livy is more than a little vague. De Beer is familiar with the Alps, and tries to answer that question...thus, an amusing foray into classical history.

1419 Gibbon and His World, by Sir Gavin De Beer (read 16 Nov 1976) This is a profusely illustrated short biography of Edward Gibbon (born 8 May 1739 at Putney, died 16 Jan 1794 at London). It is really quite well done, and the illustrations enhance the book. I really don't know whether I'll ever read his Decline and fall of the Roman Empire. (Since I read this book I have acquired [for $1, at a rummage sale], a five volume edition of it--but still I have not yet read it.)
