The book gives a brief summation of the reasons and events culminating in the American Civil War and main points in the war leading up to the Battle of Gettysburg, like the Confederacy being pushed back, replacing their lead General multiple times until they appointed Robert E. Lee. The writing is presented very matter-of-factly, with the sole purpose seeming to be to inform. The information is presented without bias, aside from the fact that the author contends that the Battle of Gettysburg was the turning point in the Civil War. Though, this isn't really much of a radical statement.

There are also short side stories about lesser known people who played a role in the battle. One such story is of John Burns, a 70 year old war veteran who joined the Union Regiment marching past his house.

I think this could work well in an American Lit class, especially if paired with something by Stephen Crane. It's an easy read, and it should be palatable even for students who are behind in their reading level. There could also be some cross discipline cooperation with a History teacher.

Mexico is a good book for young children. It contains maps, customs, politics, culture, and interactive activities for children. This book provides the side of Mexico that is not presented in the media. One fault of this book is the lack of historical information.
