Perhaps I'm biased when reading a book written by an old family friend, but I loved this. The road (and rail, and plane, and boat) trip of a lifetime, bringing Norway alive, with a cast of warm friendly people along the way. As they go the plot ramps up in excitement and perhaps down in plausibility - but who needs a story to be plausible when it starts with a baby named Elvis abandoned at a zoo. A romp, but surprisingly thoughtful too, and the framing works well. Thanks for another lovely book Chloe!… (plus d'informations)

(Review by Zoe, aged 6) I think this is one of the best books I've ever read with my mum. It's about a boy who discovers that a mackerel can talk. I loved it because it was so real-life but also so imaginary. It's kind of like it's based on a real-life story, something that could happen – but also something that couldn't really happen. I love that kind of story. I could really imagine it. I love how Fishboy loves being under the sea and sometimes he thinks that it's even better than being in his real life on dry land. Great environmentalist message but I had a couple of issues with this book.
- The father was just TOO useless to be real. Yes, it is an accepted convention in children's fiction to have "absent" parents but he just too far along the thoughtless and useless spectrum.
- I didn't like the "ghost" element either - I was OK with magical light, perfectly accepted that as part of the plot but having her actually materialise was just a step too far for me.

I bought this the second I knew it was released - and was planning to wait until I'd managed to get it signed before reading it (my mum is the author's godmother). Feeling fed up one evening though I curled up on the sofa with a small bag of mini eggs and this book and devoured them both in one sitting. 10/10 would read again and I don't care if I'm biased because Chloe is lovely :) I totally love Sir David and fish speak and magic tricks and friendship and I can't put into words how lovely this is.… (plus d'informations)
