The younger one can be quite intimidating.

Who thought working in a library could be so dangerous? Confronted with a murdered service man and a missing heiress Hannah finds this exactly what she needs to keep her mind off of Darius’ new job as a spy. A highly entertaining story with a satisfying ending even as the shadow of war grows darker.

Aunt Violet is a woman of a certain age and status who is more than capable of digging into society's darkest. Hannah Merrill is a young woman of means but not at all foolish who is volunteering in the library at the Endell Street Military Hospital in London. Which is why she is the one to find the body of Sergeant Tillman shot dead in the library. Then a young heiress volunteering as a nurse goes missing and another body is found. Hannah and her aunt have quite a lot of sleuthing to do amid the backdrop of war, probable espionage, and Scotland Yard. Excellent read!… (plus d'informations)

‘This night will haunt us for a long time...’

Being the proprietor of a bookshop is never easy, especially when you’re a woman in a man’s world. Throw in the mayhem of war and murder, recreational drugs and speakeasies and it’s a compelling read! I hope we get to see what the future has in store for Hannah and her Aunt Violet.

1915, new-series, first-in-series, england, suffragism, historical-novel, historical-places-events, historical-figures, historical-research, relationships, murder-investigation, local-law-enforcement, friends, friendship, drugs-issues, amateur-sleuth

The publisher's blurb is a good hook, so no need to repeat. The characters are engaging, the background information clear, the plot is full of red herrings, and a twist or three. The pacing is a bit irregular, but unlike TV/films, books always get better with succeeding stories in series, so I am looking forward to the next and more.
I requested and received an EARC fro Boldwood Books via NetGalley. Thank you!
