My family all loved this, but I remember thinking it was just okay. I think this is one of those books that appeals more to the region its set in than anyone else. It was a decent biography though.

I have just finished reading this book, but I have a feeling some of the lessons taken from it will stick with me for a long, long time. The author uses a straight-forward approach to sharing the story of this remarkable man who started life in a rough way, but heeded a higher calling and in doing so, changed his corner of the world.

This is the true story of a man who grew up in the mountains in an area where alcohol, inner demons, poverty, tradition, and separation from the "outside world" melded into a roiling pot of trouble. His move into sobriety and peace is amazing to read and I was captured by his determination to prevail at his goals is inspiring.

The language and descriptions used by the author are familiar to one who has grown up in the Appalachian area and would be very interesting to someone who did not. At the close of the book, I found myself sorrowful that this powerful man of God has passed from this world, as I would dearly have loved to meet him. I would also love to go see some of the "rock churches" he built and plan to do this someday.
