Picked up at the Las Vegas Historic Society (no, not that one; the one in New Mexico). A pamphlet based on a magazine article. Josefa Ortiz was only 13 when she married 32-year-old Sylvester Davis, a New Englander who headed west in 1859 to make his fortune in the Colorado mines. Somehow he got diverted to New Mexico and ended up with Josefa (who reportedly had dreamed of a “real American husband”). There were a lot of things that could have gone wrong in that relationship, but apparently nothing did; Sylvester and Josefa were happy together, became “pillars of the community”, and left lots of family. Their house in Galisteo, New Mexico, still stands. A good little local history.… (plus d'informations)
