Fun style, interesting characters, secret societies, disturbing plots, and an intriguing setting. Unfortunately, spends a bit too much time...building up to things. Things sped up nicely in the final act, however, with enough action and excitement and payoff that I very nearly bumped this to four stars. Much promise. Guess I'll got get the next one.

Sometimes, we just need a bit of fun. A read that makes us smile, if not laugh out loud—and if it offers a bit of wisdom at the same time, so much the better. Sherlock Holmes' Little Book of Wisdom by Glenn Dakin is exactly that sort of book. Assuming you are a Sherlockian—and who else would pick up such a title?—you're in for a treat. Dakin takes us on an affection review of some of Holmes' most thrilling cases in the guise of offering a self-help book. And there's so much Holmes can help us with.

On paying attention to details: "So when reading a letter from your broadband provider, bank, or even Moriarty, don't be fooled by a cheery greeting or a positive tone."

On misleading distractions: "Holmes sees beyond superstition, knowing that the macabre can be used to manipulate people and distract us from what is really going on. It happens on Scooby-Doo all the time, but Conan Doyle got there first."

On the gentleness at the heart of real friendship: "'You have a grand gift of silence, Watson," said he [Holmes]. 'It makes you quite invaluable as a companion.' Holmes likes the fact that when Watson has nothing to say, he says nothing. How unlike most of us."

If you're a Sherlockian who could use a little pick-up or if you have a friend who fits that category, Sherlock Holmes' Little Book of Wisdom can de-gloom your outlook and leave you smiling.

I received a free electronic review copy of this title from the publisher via Edelweiss; the opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed this book, even though it's a YA book it easily held my interest.
