This book is a treasure for anyone who enjoys reading about the more eccentric characters of history, and particularly for fans of the one and only Emperor of the United States, Joshua Norton. The tantalizing stories of such colorful characters as the unfortunate "Oofty Goofty," the dapper "Great Unknown," stray dogs Bummer and Lazarus, and dozens of others are sure to delight, and the numerous illustrations and the Emperor Norton portrait gallery help to bring old San Francisco to life. The writing style is pleasantly conversational, not a bit dry, and threaded throughout the book are references to the underlying culture of the times, which was the soil in which such fascinating people could thrive. Highly recommended for all fans of San Francisco, history, and weirdness!… (plus d'informations)
