Roger Cotterrell is Professor of Legal Theory at Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London. He is a trustee of the Law and Society Association (USA) and a member of the editorial advisory boards of the Journal of Law and Society (UK) and Sociologia del Diritto (Italy).

Cotterrell is unquestionably the lead scholar on Durkheim and the law, and this book serves as a careful overview of his learning on the field. Effectively conveys both the strengths and the weaknesses of Durkheim's thinking about the law, and considers why he is not more influential today (having lost the field to Weber for the most part).
