Critiques

I have three of Dane Coolidge western cowboy works-- Texas, California, and Arizona--in First Edition, but this volume is signed by the author. The author is Stanford educated wildlife expert turned western cowboy and prospector writer. The book is a journal of sorts that explains cowboy life and skills, and comes with photography taken by the author.

Classic cowboy text by a guy who actually spent time roping and photographing real cowboys before the modern era. This volume follows upon Coolidge books on Texas and Arizona cowboys, but in some ways is his best. Coolidge was born and raised in Orange County during the citrus crop era, and so his Stanford education scholarship really shines though in this work written for the lay audience. I first discovered this book as modern paperback reprint and realized that I needed the original first edition hardbound for my California and Western History Library.… (plus d'informations)

Dane Coolidge is a well known writer focusing on western history, but also graduate of Stanford, and so his books are well researched. He himself spent time with the Texas Cowboys in the 1930's. This volume has 31 photographs taken from the saddle by the author. This book is associated with two other cowboy books: Old California Cowboys and Arizona Cowboys. These are must have books for the collector of western US history and culture.

A fun book to learn about cowboys and how they lived in Arizona, California, and Old Mexico.

The book was originally published in 1939 as "Old California Cowboys." It is enhanced by numerous photos taken by the author.

There is no index.
