DISCLAIMER: I received a preview copy in exchange for a review.

WARNING: This review contains mild spoilers.

If you've never read [a:Paul E Cooley|3167922|Paul Elard Cooley|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1258123832p2/3167922.jpg] before, this is a great starter for you! It's a short novelette that showcases what Paul does best, take an everyday guy with an everyday job, then take him on a left turn into weird.

Normally, I don't give 5 star reviews, particularly for psychological horror. That looms large in my wheelhouse. I cut my teeth on Poe and Lovecraft, after all. I like my horror creepy, not just slashy. I have to tell you, this...this was creepy. I loved it!

Joseph is really having a horrible day. Bad job, bad boss, bad circumstances, and then the mimes. What Paul does with this short tale is immediately grab the reader with a believability that rings true. We've all had that job, and we've all had that boss. Joseph also behaves exactly like we would, he looks for the nearest exit. He doesn't run, horror movie style, into the deserted house. Nope, this guy flees to the familiar.

And, the bad guys. If you haven't figured it out from the cover, they're mimes, but they don't do the walking against the wind trick. They stand and freak you out. Here's a great example of Paul's tension building. Mimes preform, it's what they do. These mimes don't perform, and their wrongness grates on the nerves and plucks at the animal brain. Yeah, your gooseflesh will creep.

Paul uses an economy of words to draw you into the story, then wring you out the other end. It's a freaky, fast trip that leaves you asking, "What just happened?"

The novelette drops July 17th, 2015. If you're still on the fence just remember, it's short so your investment in time and money will be minimal, but the payback will be huge! Buy it, read it, enjoy it!

Arrival (The Black #2)
By Paul E. Cooley
I just finished reading book one which dealt with the horror of the "Black" at the oil rig. This book shows the reader what happened to the sample at the company's lab. It's just as crazy plus they have the CDC involved. Pretty good read.

The Black
By Paul E. Cooley
I sometimes get in the mood for a B movie but rather have a book version. The trouble with books is some are really good and really scary. But this worked for me even though it was suspenseful, good plot, unique creatures, interesting characters. I would say it wasn't a B movie but an A- ! Enjoyed it enough to get the next book.
Great narration!

Brilliant story that runs in the same time line as The Black. The author narration really makes the story extremely engaging. I was listening to this at work, and couldn't wait each day to settle down at the office to start listening. And it does live up to Shadowpublications' motto: 'We don't believe in happy endings'.
Only problem, now I have to wait for the third novel in series which is due for release in 2016.
