Basics: 1986, hardcover, 129 pages, 30+ b&w drawings, 375+ species discussed, no range maps

This book is a culmination of field work done on Mt. Nimba over a 20-year period, from 1962-1982. This is strictly an academic focused book to document various life history aspects of the area’s birds.

Each of the 375+ birds is discussed with a concise account of the same five categories: Specimens, impermanent colors, stomach contents, annual cycle, and habitat and habits. The last two categories receive about 80% of the attention. These offer the reader information on breeding cycles along with descriptions of the bird’s primary habitat preferences. A much longer discussion is typically given for the more unique birds, such as the endemic Coe’s Honeyguide.

Keeping in line with the book’s science-data focus, a 19-page appendix provides a table of biometrics for the birds. This data includes weights as well as measurements of the wing, tail, and bill. Perhaps too science-focused, the index contains only the scientific names of the birds. Consequently, if you know only the common name of the bird and you want to find it in the book, you’ll need to first look up the name in another book or, start thumbing through the pages until you come across the bird. Yes, the birds are arranged in taxonomic order to at least help you zero in on the families a little more quickly.

The book does provide a small offering of visuals. About 30 b&w drawings of birds are scattered throughout the pages. The introductory 26 pages contain several photos of habitat types. And, there is one very good color plate of the Anna’s Forest-Flycatcher and Coe’s Honeyguide. Another page holds three color photos of Coe’s Honeyguide, Lemon Dove, and Golden-bellied Wattle-eye.
