"Cora Oglesby and her husband, Ben, hunt things that shouldn't exist." Yeah.. I just can't shake the suspicion that this novel entered the world as Supernatural Fan-Fic, By which I mean, the TV show 'Supernatural'. This book could easily be one of those fan slash fantasies with the serial numbers filed off. It's actually hard not to read the action oriented, Cora as Dean Winchester, traveling the old west to hunt occult thinguses with her husband, Ben, the thoughtful researcher and Sam Winchester. analog. The resemblance is really too distracting. Perhaps as the book progresses, the characters and story-line would may develop beyond their seeming origins. With further reading the book might seem less like a re-colored cut-out of someone else's work. Dunno, I may be doing the author an injustice, but by page 51. I lost interest in continuing to read this book, even to confirm my Fan-Fic theory. At this point the likelihood is quite enough.… (plus d'informations)

For the first 100 pages or so of this, I wasn't sure I'd stick with it. I didn't like Cora very much, and I didn't feel like there was much development for any of the other characters. The plot was dragging. But quitting a book the first day of a new year seemed like it might be bad luck or something. I read some Goodreads reviews that said it gets better, so I kept reading. They were right-the plot picked up a lot, and the main character grew on me by the end. The book was marketed as dark fantasy, but I think it's more of a cross between a western and a horror novel. It was a decent read, I'm glad I finished it, and I'll probably pick up the next one.… (plus d'informations)

It's 1883 in Colorado and Cora and Ben Oglesby, are bounty hunters. Not your average everyday bounty hunters but hunters of vampires and other supernatural nasties. They have been successfully doing this for more than a decade. As they are passing through the small settlement of Leadville, Colorado, they are beseeched to save the settlement from a mysterious animal that has been killing the miners and towns people. Cora and Ben soon find that the creature they are hunting might not be their usual supernatural quarry.

I will have to say that I have never read anything like this. As this is not my usual type of book, I struggled with the first 50 or so pages...not because it was difficult to understand but because of the redundancy of the whole idea. It would have been a okay if the author had just worked the supernatural theme and not set it in a Gunsmoke- like town with Mr. Dillon and Chester characters. Once you get past the combining of a western with a horror novel it smooths itself out. Will I read another like this? probably not.
