Even though Siva (Shiva) is one of the oldest continuing deities to have been worshipped in human history, large portions of Saivism's philosophical and mythic traditions remain untranslated and unexplored (at the time of publication). This book considers and discusses some of these less explored aspects of Saivism.

Fred. W. Clothey is a leader in the creation of the field of ritual studies, a pioneer of ethnographic fieldwork and documentation of religious practice in India, and cofounder and longtime coeditor of the Journal of Ritual Studies (1986-1998).
