Monsieur Verdoux par Charles Chaplin
The movie was originally idealized & supposedly directed by Orson Welles. I reckon Bertold Brecht was hardly known by 1947, but I'd say his emerging ¨halo¨ influenced Chaplin. This is less obvious than , say, supernatural. Surface level similarities: the strictly episodic structure, tragic use of irony, philosophical use of history as a distancing effect and its echoes on the present.
"One murder makes a villain, millions, a hero." (Verdoux apud Stalin). The irony of war.

Monsieur Verdoux par Charles Chaplin
A man murders wealthy women to support his family.

When it's funny, it's good (although never great), but there's a lot of movie here that's more along the lines of serious drama. I can't help thinking of this as Time Travelin' Charlie Chaplin's attempt at making a Coen Brothers movie - which sounds like a great thing, except it's not. Chaplin's a great comic, but I don't think he's much of a filmmaker. I understand it's a groundbreaking movie, but when you've seen some of the great black comedies that followed it, it doesn't hold up.

"Mabel's Married Life" par Charles Chaplin
A jealous husband gets drunk.

Worth watching for Mabel Normand's Tramp impression. Mostly, though, it's not especially well done compared to later Chaplin shorts.
