- Clara Longworth was born into a wealthy family that was involved in Ohio politics for many years. Her brother Nicholas, a congressman, become Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1901, Clara married Comte Aldebert de Chambrun, a direct descendant of the Marquis de Lafayette, and the couple had two children. At age 48, the Comtesse earned a doctorate from the Sorbonne and won critical acclaim as a Shakespeare scholar. She became one of the founding members of the American Library in Paris.
