Patrick F. Caruso was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1945 and served as a rifle company officer with K Company, Ninth Regiment of the Third Marine Division, on Iwo Jima until he was wounded and evacuated on 10 March 1945. Following the war, he was a rehabilitation afficher plus officer with the Veterans Administration. In 1953 Caruso began teaching American history, launching a career in education that continued until 1981 when he retired after thirteen years as superintendent of the Morris Hills, New Jersey, school district. Still a resident of New Jersey, he is the author of numerous newspaper and magazine articles, including an Associated Press story commemorating the battle of Iwo Jima afficher moins

Brief, but, excellent memoir of a new platoon leader on Iwo Jima who was the comapny compander by the end of the first hour because all his senior officers were casualties as well as one third of the entire company. His recollections, compiled while in the hospital after his being wounded 14 days into the campaign, plus those of other survivors portray a world beyond belief for those whose have not had the experience. Most of the marines were very young but heroes were everywhere and uncommon valor became the standard.… (plus d'informations)
