Pretty good assortment of ghost stories, representative of its type (paperback horror anthologies of the mid-20th century) right down to the cover illustration. There are lesser tales by Henry James ("The Romance of Certain Old Clothes") and Algernon Blackwood ("Running Wolf") as well as André Maurois's splendid vignette "The House," which Rod Serling fleshed out and transformed into a genuinely disturbing segment on Night Gallery. Arthur Machen skillfully merges psychological disquiet with physical revulsion in "The Novel of the White Powder," and Shirley Jackson weaves one of her strongest tales of ghostly surrealism in "The Lovely House"; these are the best stories in the book.
