Aifric Campbell

This is the tale of Geri, an investment banker working in the stock market. At the beginning we see Geri's big trade and find out about her big client, Felix, who will only trade through her.
As the book progresses, we see her life falling apart. Her boyfriend left her ~ 6 months ago and she is still not over that. Felix wants her to move to Hong Kong. She is drinking too much and not sleeping, running on fumes, living on her past achievements and is on a slippery slope downwards. Things come to a head over the few days leading up to the 1st Gulf War, when she gets flown out to Hong King to meet Felix and understand his intention in relation to a specific stock, and a potential takeover. At which point Stephen reappears, takes advantage of her, and leaves again. It all gets very complicated on her return. In the final section we hear about Geri's upbringing, what has taken her to her current position.
At the end, Geri seems to be faced with a choice of planes to catch, to two different locations. One would be the continuation of her current life, the other would be a complete break from the past. I find myself hoping that she made a decision that made her happy for herself - I just can't decide which one it should be.… (plus d'informations)

Diverse keren gedacht het voor gezien te houden; pas ver na blz. 100 werd het interessant(er). De auteur dwaalt vaak van het pad af. Allerlei uitstapjes naar wat iemand zou kúnnen doen, hoe ie gekleed is, wat ie dacht, wat er misschien gebeurd zou kúnnen zijn. Er staan - naar mijn mening - gekunstelde zinnen in, bijv. 'Het is een proces van demystificatie dat de illusie van beheersbaarheid wekt'.
Thematiek is overigens wél interessant (linguistiek, logica, psychologie).
Het verhaal is in de derde persoon geschreven, maar soms denk je een ik-verhaal te lezen. Je weet niet altijd vanuit wiens perspectief het verhaal nu verteld wordt. Dat maakt het verwarrend.
Het boek is gebaseerd op een waargebeurde onopgeloste moord. Even was ik bang dat ook in dit boek de moord onopgelost zou blijven, maar dat blijft de lezer gelukkig bespaard: je komt wel te weten wat er nu gebeurd is.
Kortom; begin van het verhaal is een worsteling, daarna wordt het íetsje beter, maar meer dan 2 sterren vind ik het niet waard.… (plus d'informations)

Tja, wat zal ik ervan zeggen? Het verhaal is zeker niet slecht geschreven, maar de hoofdpersoon Caro komt voor mij niet echt tot leven. Bij de oude man kan ik me wat voorstellen, bij het hondje, zelfs bij het vermoorde jeugdvriendinnetje. Maar niet bij Caro en niet bij het buurjongetje. In het begin van het boek wordt aangeduid dat Estelle vermoord is toen ze 15 was. En dat houdt je het hele boek lang bezig; je wil weten wat er gebeurd is. Maar daar kom je natuurlijk pas op het allerlaatst achter en het is een beetje een anticlimax. Voor de rest bestaat het verhaal uit - naar mijn gevoel - allerlei losse elementen; een schade-expert (verzekeringen), toevallige ontmoeting op kerkhof, flashbacks naar jeugd....… (plus d'informations)
