Peggy Cooper Cafritz was born Pearl Alice Cooper in Mobile, Alabama on April 7, 1947. While a junior at George Washington University, she and the choreographer Mike Malone founded a summer program that is now the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. Cooper Cafritz was also a founder of the Black afficher plus Student Union at George Washington University and pushed successfully for the Greek organizations there to prohibit racial discrimination. She became an arts patron and civil rights activist. At the time of her death, she amassed one of the country's largest private collections of African-American art. Her book, Fired Up! Ready to Go! Finding Beauty, Demanding Equity: African American Life in Art, was published in 2018. She died from complications of pneumonia on February 18, 2018 at the age of 70.
