2024 book #12. 2017. David Byrne (of Talking Heads fame) gives his musings on what music is, where it comes from, how it is made and sold, and what it's good for, with copious examples from his long and successful career. Very enjoyable and even informative. Recommended.

Idiosyncratic take on how he feels about music, his experiences in the music industry, his ideas about what makes music special etc. It talks a good amount about his Talking Heads/solo experience but it's not like a musical autobiography type thing, although you probably won't be too interested if you don't care much about his musical career. It also doesn't talk about music theory (or only tiny bits) and almost all of it is pretty accessible if you don't know much about music, although it's also not gonna teach you much theoretical stuff. In general I enjoyed it and it gave me stuff to think about although every so often he gives out a fact I'm not sure is accurate and there's a few big generalisations about "African music" and stuff.… (plus d'informations)

Maybe not perceived as ground-breaking as the previous Bicycle Diaries (maybe because Byrne here actually talks about his job?), is nonetheless (and for the same reasons) a more focused work. The first part - and more generally the autobiographic stuff - works generally better than the second but all in all is a good introduction (and also a starting point, thanks to its small but significant bibliography) to various aspects of our relationship with music.

A nice companion to the film, with an introduction by David Byrne on the idea and the process and then basically the screenplay enriched not only by stage and behind the scenes pictures but also by real newspapers articles that inspired the movie, some various materials and sketches, and so on. It's a difficult to find book, but worth a search for all those who appreciated Byrne's approach.
