The art style is soft and pleasant with cute and expressive (cat) characters, while the story is 1920's historical fiction with plenty of (sometimes dark) comedy. Sounds like a hit. But the story was published online, page by page, and... it shows. It doesn't read like a graphic novel, like a singular work. Also the story is apparently still (slowly) being published after 11 years. Not really what I was looking for and it didn't grab me, unfortunately.

I love this comic! Set during the prohibition era, it follows Mitzi May and her attempts to keep her gin joint the Lackadaisy afloat. There's intrigue in the backstory of how her husband Atlas died, and a terrific cast of characters such as Rocky, Ivy, Viktor and Mordecai. Freckle is so cute. Have I mentioned they're all cats?

I came across the web comic Lackadaisy, via StumbleUpon, when I found Tracy Butler's tutorial on drawing facial expressions --> http://lackadaisy.foxprints.com/exhibit.php?exhibitid=333 It was so entertaining I went to the archives and spent the evening reading ALL of the comics. Wonderful stuff.

Why buy the book if the comics are online?
1. To support the artist.
2. Sitting down with a book helps with, for lack of better words, "the flow" of the work. I saw more details and had greater appreciation for the comic as a whole. It's a Gestalt thing, I guess.

I'm looking forward to a second volume!

P.S. For other Lackadaisy readers, I'm a big fan of both Freckle and Mordecai.
