- See www.sylviaengdahl.com/mbe.htm. Mildred Allen Butler was the pen name of Mildred Butler Engdahl. She was born and raised in New England and earned a B.A. from Wellesley College. She taught high school English for several years and also worked as a director of community theaters. She moved to Los Angeles, married and obtained an M.A. in Drama from the University of Oregon. She served as director of the Portland Civic Theatre and Children's Theater in Oregon as well as in Santa Barbara, California, and published some plays for children. Late in her life, she began writing historical biographies and novels aimed at young adults as well as articles for scholarly magazines. She was the mother of writer Sylvia Engdahl.
