Francis X. Busch

Accounts of four potentially capital cases resulting in acquittals. The best known is the Hall-Mills ("Pigwoman") case (which William Kunsler suggested in another book was actually committed by the KKK --I doubt it, in New Jersey.) Another case notorious in its time was the trial of Caleb Powers for allegedly instigating the murder of William Goebel, contending governor-elect of Kentucky. The version here is less sympathetic to Goebel than the version in The Great Revolt and Its Leaders -- The Great Revolt sees Goebel as a genuine Populist fighting the Louisville and Nashville Railroad's domination of Kentucky; Busch sees Goebel as an ambitious an unscrupulous politician who was at least as willing to use any means necessary to win election as his rivals.… (plus d'informations)
