That was seriously lacking in substance. There was little to no actual suspense in the plot. The Smell of Lies is a romantic story disguised as a murder mystery. I was not at all interested in this book. I won't be continuing to read the books in this series.
For me this book was slow going because of the narrative style. It is third-person style which I find, at times, to be difficult for me. I find it hard to form a relationship with the characters when a story is told in this style. However it is a compelling look at everyday life in a alcohol related domestic violence home. It is a poignant reminder of how sad and painful that life is for all. Sofia and Eva's hopes for the future and their tenacity at reaching that brighter future brings to mind the resilience of families caught in this nightmare. I found this to be a very interesting story and would like to read what happened after this book ends. I thought it was a good book but I didn't feel it was a little bit drawn out when it really didn't have to be. But I would recommend this to others to read if you like good mysteries.
