Merriman gets a new ship, a 74, equipped as usual with a treasury agent and is off to Italy. Shaping up the ship takes a while with some human vermin that needs to be dealt with. But, he also gets to be a commodore with a squadron and escort duties. French frigates attack and are dealt with very expeditiously despite static from one recalcitrant merchant captain.
Subsequent espionage in Venice discovers French ships of the line under construction with one virtually ready for sea. A really bloody battle results in many casualties including Sir James. Merriman travels to South America with orders to stir things up by challenging the French, the Spanish and any and all privateers. He has a new secret agent on board with orders to retrieve information from a grounded and abandoned Indiaman. Lots of action and loot plus taking down an old nemesis make this another successful voyage for Merriman and the Lord Stevenage. Not without flaws but a fun read.

Still doing double duty as a frigate captain and a purveyor of spies, Merriman heads to Denmark and the Baltic. Capturing the occasional French ship, after all, prize money is well; to be prized. His careful plotting of Copenhagen's defenses is a big help to the "Little Admiral" Nelson. Meanwhile, back at the family manse, his wife more than holds her own during a serious house invasion. Not a memorable series but an enjoyable one.
