The Green Rose is a blend of romance and fantasy and Stephanie Burkhart blends them well. I've read some fantasy and plenty of romance novels, but the fantasy romance blend is a newer genre for me as a reader.

Fantasy elements such as the four kingdoms of Gaiia, magical time portals and the enchanted forest are well blended into the medieval tapestry which makes up this story. Peace has reined for so long in Gaiia the magical green rose has almost been forgotten. When two kings are abducted by the villainous mage, Princess Sonia and Prince Ivanstan set out on a journey to rescue their fathers. But first they must obtain the green rose from the witches who guard it. To reach the rose, or their fathers, they must battle wyldebeasts and Princess Sonia's ex-fiance, who is in league with the mage.

Intertwined with these fantasy elements of story, is the romance between Princess Sonia and Prince Ivanistan. The passion between the two is strong as they are pulled toward each other amid all the obstacles they face. And they are rarely alone. The nobles of Gaiia are bound to animals, Princess Sonia to her falcon and Prince Ivanistan to his dragon. Marriages are prearranged. Falcon and dragon have not been considered matches and their fathers may not give their blessing to this match. The animals they are bound to must accept their match as well. Prince Ivanistan is a strong and considerate lover, always thinking of Princess Sonia first. Teaching her to use her magic, wanting her to succeed, he is the sort of hero to dream about.

An enchanting, enjoyable read.

Wow! Here we go again another book that everyone else loved but for me I was not in love with the book. I really liked the book just I could not for the life of me really really get into the book. Maybe I am in a book funk I just did not love the book. The story was good, short, and sweet I just could not fall in love with it.

What a brilliant read. I love the combination of all our favourite fantasy breeds, werewolves, witches and vampires.

From the start, I was drawn into this read, for two reasons: I loved that fast-paced rescue that started straight away. Already we were thrown into the lives of our main characters. However, all was not even remotely as it seemed. There was memory alerting, changing and a daring rescue, though we aren’t sure why or even who the rescuers are. The second reason is that the author had an exceptional writing talent.

I found it hard not to connect with the characters. From the start, we are given enough detail to picture what the characters are like. Every rippling muscle, that dark hair and his murky eyes, I fell for our leading man because he was just too irresistible. I loved that the author was able to create a full cast of characters, each with their own personality and characteristics, and each either joined into the race or was inherently against the grain.

The author had a pure talent for being able to write even the most mundane or trivial actions as a romantic and scorching hot interaction. Talking, a hug or even just learning against Michael is the steamiest thin you can imagine. The romance isn’t overdone, it is just woven into everyday actions, to create a truly real urge for our two mains to be together. I loved that there was a primal urge to join Michael, a true sense that everything was right when they were together. It also made the whirlwind rescue even better.

The pace of the story was done very well. It was a great blend of a action packed, fast paced, urgent battle to save everything you know (or don’t, in our main lady’s case) and slower, subtle moments where it is as if Michael and her are the only two in the world. I liked how the pace would flip, in a moment’s notice, leaving wanting more more more.

The storyline was good. It was a new take on a favourite blend of character breeds. I liked that the author mixed historical sounding fiction with pure fantasy. It gave the story a feel that it was real and true part of this world. This made it easy to connect with and really get into.

Overall, I found this story interesting and a true pleasure to read. I highly recommend giving it a go. I know I’ll be checking out more by this author.

*I received this book for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion.

Expecting a new baby in the family, whether in times past or in today’s world, is a big event. Mom prepares for the baby’s arrival by sewing little outfits or buying the latest styles for him or her to wear. Dad makes sure the soon to be addition to the family has a crib or cradle to sleep in, as well as other items to make the little one comfortable.

In Author Stephanie Burkhart’s newest picture book, JOSEPH’S CRADLE, Mom and Dad do the same. Dad builds a new cradle for his child. Mary knits booties and clothes for the baby. And so they wait for the happy day to arrive. This is a sweet and gentle story about the parents of Jesus and how they might have passed the time in the months before his birth.

The artwork by Matthew Hughes is realistic for the timeframe of the story, with beautiful, soft pastel shades for the scenery and characters that very well could be from hundreds of years ago. The illustration at the end of the story is my favorite in the book.

A lovely story for this special time of year and for anytime, in fact. Children should enjoy learning about the Christ Child’s family. This book would make a nice addition to school libraries, public libraries and of course your own library.
