Michael Bunker

This was the first book by this author that I had read, but it won't be my last. Based on the title you aren't expecting a "warm and fuzzy" ending. The opening is dark and somber which further reinforces your gut-feeling. I found the book to be a page-turner even suspecting that there would be a dark ending. The author did a great job of weaving optimistic, peaceful passages in with the more action oriented story. This technique helped hold my interest and added to the edge-of-your-seat feel. While the author draws on the classic Frankenstein idea the relationship between Dr. and Monster is very different. The inclusion of the Amish community, as a significant story element, helped give the book some of the "feel" of the classic book and not just a hi-tech, sci-fi book.
