- Kalisha Buckhanon's novels are Solemn, Conception and Upstate. Her short stories are widely published in many online and university print literary journals. Her articles and essays appear on several popular women's websites and cultural blogs. Her writing awards include an American Library Association Alex Award, Friends of American Writers Award, and Terry McMillan Young Author Award. Kalisha's work has received attention in major media outlets such as Essence, The Guardian, BBC-London, TV-One, People, Elle, Entertainment Weekly and Marie Claire. She has an M.F.A. from The New School in New York City, and her B.A. and M.A. in English from University of Chicago. She writes at her blog Negression.com.

Upstate: A Novel par Kalisha Buckhanon
An amazing book that felt raw yet heartwarming at the same time. It is one of those books where you think it is just another one of "those", but it so much more. It is intellectually stimulating without even trying to be and I believe it will stay with readers long after the last page is turned.
Bittersweet story of a couple who stay in touch over the years, during the man's incarceration and after. It starts out gritty, but improves as it goes along. Really evokes the 90s as well.
There were a few passages I had to skip due to triggery content, but overall, a complex and compelling read.
Other reviewers commented that this book is a slow starter, so I may try again in the future, but for now, this was just too much of a slog to pursue.
