A very informative book about Mexican Americans. There are 6 categories on their culture, beliefs, hardships, and much more. My favorite part was how they gave the steps to becoming a citizen. Of course since I'm Mexican American, I am pleased they talked about our culture so people can know how important we are. I would recommend this book to people who want to learn about different cultures.

This is part of Checkerboard series of Everyday Heroes books. It tells about some of the training of the members of the National Guard. It also gives a brief history of the beginnings of the National Guard and discusses some of the wars they have participated in. It touches on almost every aspect of the National Guard. It bolds important vocabulary words and provides a glossary for children to look up their meanings.

The National Guard highlighted on the specific roles of this group of people. The people in the National Guard live ordinary lives until something major happens in our country. I thought this book was very informative. I learned things about the National Guard that I did not know. I would use this book in a social studies class to show my students the role of the National Guard. I definitely enjoyed the book, so I think my students would too.

While I have not heard much about Somali Americans, I feel it is important to be familiar with a variety of cultures to be better prepared to teach diverse students. From this book, I learned about the traditions and customs of Somali Americans and how they are incorporated into their lives in America.
