A fun read for anyone with a passion for beer and the places where we drink beer. I'd love to read a similar writeup of American drinking habits, but this peak into the English love affair with beer was entertaining even for this outsider.

This is fun, especially if you are at all interested in beer.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and Mr Brown's writing. It is not only an overview of English comfort food, it is a critique of modern foodie culture and modern life in general. The book certainly brings the British class snobbery into focus, particularly with Fish and Chips being a lower class item, but also the modern tendency to have small local eateries being pushed out in the name of progress (and therefore allowing for higher rents) and replaced by chains. Written in a friendly, journalistic style a guide to apples and orchards. Well a guide to English apples and orchards anyway. Enjoyable, personal and by no means comprehensive, scientific or horticultural. A sociology of apples is a more likely description. |You get to know the author as much as you get to know about apples, but that's no bad thing.
