In the Golden Nineties par Henry Collins Brown
1927. Slightly obsessive compendium of what New York city was like in the 1890s. Cover the developments in architecture and growth of the city extensively. Takes a racist turn in a section called "coon songs." Covers all the names of the theatre of the time slightly. The great posters of Maxfield Parrish and his ilk. The homes of the rich and famous. The hotels and restaurants. Generally comprehensive. Mentions everything, but skims over most. Definitely gives you a feel for the time though. Enjoyed most of it, when he wasn't just listing names of people I'd never heard of. Also the importance of horses as they diminished due to the automobile.… (plus d'informations)
Nice local history, but what is exceptional is the large foldout dual photos showing NYC in 1876 (approx. 2 feet by 3 feet), when the Brooklyn Bridge was first being built, and in 1917, when the book was published. Also a nice foldout of a color painting of Peter Stuyvesant entering NYC.
Old-fashioned type of nostalgia, where the title is attractive but the contents unreliable.
