This is my first Bill Brooks novel and I will be looking for another. Captain Gus Rogers of the Texas rangers asks Jim Glass to go to Mexico to free his grandson who is being held there facing execution for the murder of the General's daughter. The Mexican general holding the grandson wants Captain Rogers to bring the head of his older grandson in in order to save the younger one being held in jail.

Glass is faced with finding and arresting the older boy and taking him to Mexico and making the exchange. Lots of action, twists and turns making this a quick and enjoyable read.… (plus d'informations)

The book was good but... the film was better. Arthur Penn genius fleshed out Bill Brooks story and the acting brought the characters, a bit two-dimensional in the book - to life.

This book is worth reading, if only because it finally gives Bonnie a voice, an individual personality, and a back history. Furthermore, it’s short. Otherwise, the often-told story gains nothing from this retelling, and after a while, the broken English of the “salt-of-the-earth” locals begins to seem affected and annoying. Some readers will enjoy the new perspective enough to overcome the mediocre treatment, but a few will struggle to finish.

I count "Last Stand at Sweet Sorrow" as the first genuine genre-type western I've read, and I liked it enough that I'm now reading the second installment of the series. I had read Brooks' Billy-the-Kid novel, "The Stone Garden" and was fairly impressed with it, but I consider that one more of a literary work.

This one comes out with quite a grabber of an openning, and it really gets the book moving. The writing is pretty consistent, and not over-done; a few cliches, maybe. A little more stage direction would have helped, also (is the guy inside or outside? Standing or sitting? etc.), but Brooks can deliver some fine passages, and the writing is enjoyable throughout.

The story is also fairly involving, if maybe one thread, and two or three characters too many make the book a tad ungainly, but still well worth reading. (Don't know yet if this is typical of contemporary westerns). Despite these quibbles, a very good read, I'd say.
