Eoin O Broin is an author and a political activist. He was a member of Belfast City Council from 2001-2004 for Sinn Féin and was also an unsuccessful candidate in the 2009 Dáil and Seanad Elections for that party. He has also held a number of executive positions for the party in the past.

This is an interesting and very well written book. The author is an articulate speaker and election candidate for the Sinn Féin party and that is what influenced me to acquire a work of his to read. O Broin gives a very good historical account of how the Sinn Féin party evolved from that founded by Arthur Griffith in 1905 to the current genus led by Gerry Adams even though they are radically different and many would dispute whether they would have any links at all. He postulates at eight separate evolutions of the Sinn Féin party and describes individuals and thinkers who, in his view, introduced a republican-socialist theory into the party, particularly Liam Mellows and James Connolly. The conclusions chapters providing nine theses regarding the party’s future potential prospects make for interesting reading. There is also a useful discussion on older revolutionary movements in the 19th century. The author provides a large bibliography but throughout the text he is apt to refer to certain texts as revisionist, predictably hostile to his views and those of the current Sinn Féin party, and he does also quote frequently from Sinn Féin’s party newspaper, An Phoblacht.
